etnies Expands Buy a Shoe, Plant a Tree Program to Include Fighting Poverty and Environmental Decay

2021 marks the 10th year of etnies Buy a Shoe, Plant a Tree (BASPAT) program. etnies will continue the BASPAT program in partnership with Trees for the Future– an agroforestry non-profit that trains farmers through a 4-year training program, called the Forest Garden Approach, farmers plant thousands of trees that restore their soil. This helps farmers grow a large variety of fruits and vegetables to eat and sell. Not only does each Forest Garden capture carbon and increase biodiversity, but it also ends hunger and poverty. Thanks to the help of the etnies community the BASPAT Program planted more than 2 million trees on three continents over the last decade.
etnies BASPAT program started in Costa Rica with etnies commitment to plant one tree for every Jameson 2 Eco shoe sold. After accomplishing the goal of 35,000 trees in the Maleku reserve, etnies partnered with Trees for the Future and expanded the program. etnies BASPAT has always been about taking steps to improve the environment.

The Forest Garden Approach takes degraded land and brings nutrients back to the soil through planting thousands of trees. The Forest Garden Approach is a solution to the problem of the planet earth losing trees at the rate of 50 soccer fields per minute. The Forest Garden Approach plants trees and provides food security, increased income, restored land and carbon capture. This reaches nine of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

HOW IT WORKS
The Forest Garden approach starts with farmers planting thousands of trees that restore soil. This helps farmers grow a large variety of fruits and vegetables to eat and sell. So not only does each Forest Garden capture carbon and increase biodiversity, but it also ends hunger and poverty. etnies consumers and Trees for the Future are working together to grow a more sustainable system to feed the world, build local economies and better our planet. The Forest Gardens are currently being created in countries in East and West Africa impacted greatly by climate change, food insecurity and poverty.

To step up the tree planting even more, etnies is also launching an Earth Day Tree Drive. For every etnies.com order from 4/22/21 – 4/30/21 etnies will donate an extra tree to the BASPAT program.
